The release of The Haunted Youth’s highly anticipated sophomore album, Boys Cry Too, marks the next chapter in the career of songwriter / frontman Joachim Liebens’ musical project. From the towering eight-minute opening track “In My Head,” to the final, haunted strum of “Ghost Girl,” Boys Cry Too presents a viscerally powerful journey through loss, despair, heartache, rage and hope. It’s a record fueled by personal emotional turmoil, but one that also reveals a naked vulnerability, reflected in the crystalline beauty of tracks like “Emo Song” and “Hurt,” and the emotionally raw confessions within Liebens’ lyrics. “I wanted to show the vulnerable part of men and boys and celebrate it, instead of making it this whole stigma that’s been going on for so long”, he explains. That emotional spectrum is reflected in a change of instrumentation, with live drums and guitars coming more into focus ahead of the layers of sun-bleached synths that characterized the band’s debut.
